Time is ripe to alter Manchester United's system - Amorim declares.

Manchester United squad members in training
Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes was one of multiple first-team players absent from the holiday period triumph against Newcastle United.

Manager Ruben Amorim argues that changing Man Utd's formation due to public noise would have been "the end" for him.

Initially against Newcastle, Amorim ditched his customary back three formation with wing-backs and instead deploy an orthodox four-man defense with two holding midfielders.

He himself conceded this at times transformed into a six-man defensive block in the final phase as his side held on for a victory - securing only their second-ever shutout of the season.

While he once famously remarked that not even the highest authority could pressure him to change his approach, Amorim asserts the capacity to play with alternative setups has remained part of his strategy.

However, he clarifies he could solely alter the tactics when his team were performing well enough - lest it would look as if he was giving in to outside criticism.

"At the time I came here the previous campaign, I recognized maybe I lacked the squad to excel in that system, but it was the start of a project," he stated.

"The goal was to build an philosophy. Today is a distinct moment. We are missing a full complement of personnel, and we need adapt, so they see the reason we are switching things up.

"This isn't because of the demands of the media, or the supporters.

"When the press discuss changing the formation repeatedly, I cannot make a change because the squad will believe I'm altering things because of external voices and I feel that is a disaster for the coach.

"Once we are getting results in our system, then is the opportunity to change.

"We will grow into a more complete squad because when our full complement of players return, we are not planning to employ a back three exclusively."

Availability Crisis Loom Large

With only two wins in eight games before beating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is right to say his team have been in good form.

He is, though, operating with a injury-ravaged squad, with seven senior players already ruled out for the forthcoming home game against winless Wolves.

That total will increase if playmaker Mason Mount fails to shake off the knock that forced his exit from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is a key name who will miss the Wolves match, even though he is understood to be pushing his manager to let him to make a comeback following his hamstring injury.

"Bruno is already saying he has to train," said Amorim. "But there is absolutely no possibility he is going to play against Wolves. No chance. That's definitive."

Fernandes' Role Is Unwavering

Nevertheless, the Portuguese star will almost certainly continue to be deeply engaged, as whereas most injured players watch matches from a private box, Fernandes was observed monitoring the warm-ups from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his captain to carry on providing input.

"The guy is a natural leader," he affirmed. "He must not be the type of player that when he is absent, he's not talking and offering advice. He's constantly communicating. That's why he's the skipper.

"He has negative aspects at times - the way he moves his arms - but he has a multitude of strengths. Even after he recovers, he heads to watch the other guys practicing. There are a many aspects you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he desires my position or not, but he's a born leader. The guy is a leader."

Recovery Schedule for Key Personnel

While the specific timeline for Fernandes' comeback - and that of other unavailable players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains uncertain, by the end of January, the club will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international competition.
