A minimum of thirteen passengers killed and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.
A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in national works. They were built at an rapid speed, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
